Service Description

Friday 28th August 6 - 8pm A maximum of 12 participants “There are five colours in ink.” Within what appears to be a single shade of black live infinite expressions - light and shadow, stillness and movement, the spreading of ink and the beauty of dry brush textures. Ink painting, which traveled from China to Japan and was cultivated under a unique Japanese aesthetic sensibility, finds its charm not only in what is painted, but equally in the “Yohaku, empty space”. This “empty space” invite the viewer’s imagination, fostering an active engagement in which the audience completes the work within their own mind. In this workshop, participants begin by grinding the ink stick. While exploring the distinct qualities of paper, brush, and ink, you will carefully experience the five fundamental brush techniques and essential ink expression methods that form the foundation of ink painting. Through repeated practice, you will discover the depth of a world expressed solely through gradations of black, and savour the beauty of monochrome. The techniques of ink painting also cultivate sensibilities that resonate with other forms of expression, such as watercolour. Let us share a quiet and relaxing moment together, engaging with ink. Notes: All completed works may be taken home. Please wear clothing that can get dirty. Aprons will be provided. The ink used in Japanese ink wash painting contains animal glue, and the brushes are made with animal hair. Therefore, the materials are not vegan.
