Artist of the Week
Our Artist of the Week window exhibition changes fortnightly on Fridays, showcasing the work of one featured artist or maker in our front gallery window.
These rotating displays are an opportunity to discover original artwork, handmade collections and emerging creatives from across the local area and beyond.
Each feature offers a closer look at the artist behind the work, celebrating their style, inspiration and creative process through a carefully curated window exhibition. Many of our featured artists are exhibiting with us for a limited time only, making each display a unique opportunity to discover something new.

John Darnell
John Darnell’s passion for photography began long before the digital age. Starting his professional career in photography in 1959, before spending more than 40 years working in television as a camera operator and later TV Director, image-making has remained a constant thread throughout his life.
Now retired from television, John devotes more time to creating photographic works inspired by landscape, light and atmosphere. His approach goes far beyond capturing a scene. For John, photography is an artistic process that begins with observation and light, then develops through careful editing and craftsmanship to realise the final vision. Every photograph is personally printed by John, with larger pieces professionally framed behind specialist AR70 glass to enhance clarity and reduce reflection.
Working under the philosophy that photography is simply another way of making pictures, John’s work invites viewers to pause, look closely and connect emotionally with a moment in time. His collection Images from Landscape explores not only what is seen through the lens, but also how imagination and interpretation can shape the final image.
As John says: “It begins with the light and the editing eye… but often the creative juices begin to see more in a particular image and how that moment begins to play on the imagination.”
